Miracle on 1810 Laurens Street.

Beginning in June of 2010, Long Fence and Home and Under Armour worked with Sandtown Habitat for Humanity to provide a home for a needy family in Baltimore City.  In December of 2010, the home was completed and dedicated to Mr. Kevin Wiggins.  This is Sandtown’s 300th home and they are applying for LEED Platinum certification.  If granted certification this will be the first LEED Platinum home in Baltimore.

The video above shows the several stages and the people who worked to make this possible. It begins with the removal of the concrete flooring by Under Armour CEO, Kevin Plank and Under Armour Green Manager, Will Phillips. After the framing, Long Windows steps in to provide the hyper energy efficient windows and doors.  Lastly, the home is completed and we receive a guided tour of the home from Will Phillips.

Long Fence and Home couldn’t be prouder to be a part of this project.  We take great pride in improving the communities we service and thank Sandtown Habitat for Humanity for the chance to contribute.  We look forward to working with them again in the future.

A list of the home’s Green Features is provided after the jump!

The Story of Sandtown Habitat for Humanity

Before we visit the open house next week, we’d like to give you a little more background on Sandtown Habitat for Humanity.  What they’ve done for the city of Baltimore is remarkable.  Sandtown used to be an area full of unattractive vacant houses.  Sandtown Habitat for Humanity has embarked on the mission to completely change housing in the area.  Their latest creation isn’t just the fruit of a hard working community.  It will be the first LEED Platinum home in Baltimore City.  The home is at 1810 Laurens St. in Baltimore and the open house is scheduled for January 20th and 22nd. The video about is their story.

Framing the Sandtown Habitat for Humanity Home

A few weeks ago the recipients of the Habitat for Humanity home, for which we donated the best energy efficient windows and doors, received their keys to space. Before this day, there was plenty of hard work, planning and collaboration to create the first LEED Platinum home in Baltimore City. Effective framing requires planning right from the start. Many builders will address framing on the spot or leave it in the hands of another professional. However, to get the most out of the other energy efficiency ideas and to consume the least amount of lumber, framing was a key detail in this home. Check out the video and let us know what you think.
