Claude Hall: Attitude Makes A DifferenceJuly 28, 2010When I first met Claude Hall, I immediately took note of his genuine enthusiasm and upbeat attitude. Of course I also noticed his physical disability, but that isn’t what stood out. A positive attitude is too often forgotten in the modern workplace, where bad days are contagious. Claude and I have worked together for nearly 3 months and I haven’t seen or heard anything negative from him during that time. As Claude will gladly tell you, it takes a certain type of person to be a Call Center Representative. Fortunately for our company, he is that type of person.
“My goal and mindset is always to be focused and determined.” Any job which calls for an employee to speak directly to clients and consumers can be a tough gig. For over a year, Claude has managed to find a groove in his role at Long Fence and Home. He talks to numerous clients a day, listens to their concerns and informs them about possible solutions. This requires patience, resolve and the ability to communicate clearly. Claude has these skills in spades and wields them on a daily basis. “I feel as though I have been put here in this situation I am in – to see if I can overcome obstacles.” Claude is affectionately referred to as “Wheels” around the office. He can’t hide from or mask his disability, but rather treats it as just another daily obstacle. There is no whining or asking for special attention, he just shows up to work and gets the job done. When not in the office, you might find Claude on the court. His eyes light up when you mention his basketball team, the Maryland Ravens. He is a point guard, which means he is usually in charge of directing traffic and setting up plays on the fly. This is another area where his communications skills are put to good use; not only as a 15-year veteran, but also as a spokesman for the team’s Disability Awareness Program (DAP). DAP is an outreach program where the team travels to schools and other organizations to teach the younger generations about overcoming disabilities. Recently, Long Fence and Home made a donation to the Maryland Ravens to help them continue their work in the community. After interviewing Claude, I look at people with poor attitudes in a new way. I used to ignore them, but now I have to question: “Is your mind-set improving your situation?” Claude notes that there are people in the world that if put in his position would be overwhelmed with negativity. He merely sees his disability as another challenge and opportunity to showcase his determination. Seeing Wheels’ approach to work and his passion is in a word – “inspiring”. Though I’m sure everyone lucky enough to be around him feels the same way. Leave a Comment |
