April 16, 2010DC Greens Its BuildingsThe District of Columbia is climbing the charts when it comes to energy-efficient buildings, according to the Environmental Protection Agency’s annual city rankings. Climbing from fourth place in 2008 to second place last year, D.C. now boasts 204 Energy-Star rated buildings, adding up to about 55 million square feet of energy-efficient floor space. In addition to saving enough energy to power 36,100 homes, this achievement also saved a combined $62.3 million in just one year! April 14, 2010Energy Star Certification Process Comes Under FireBy now, you’ve likely heard about the recent finding that Energy Star labels are not always applied to, well, energy-efficient products. It seems that the program’s lax standards make it vulnerable to fraud and abuse, according to the findings from a nine-month investigation by the Government Accountability Office, a nonpartisan watchdog group that reports directly to Congress. To test the certification process, the GAO applied for Energy Star approval on phony products such as a gas-powered alarm clock and an air cleaner that was actually a space heater with a feather duster and fly strips taped to it. April 9, 2010Nationals’ New Stadium Receives LEED RatingThe Washington Nationals’ new stadium is a home run—for the environment. Thanks to its environmentally friendly construction, the new stadium near the Anacostia River is the first Major League ballpark to receive a silver LEED rating from the U.S. Green Building Council. For those of you who are unfamiliar with it, LEED is an internationally recognized certification system that verifies a building was designed using strategies to reduce its overall impact on the environment. |
